After removing your old thermostat, you just need to install the new one. Use the installation steel and trim plate and place the nest base into place. Make sure the base is secure in place and connect the wires. And that's the way you should have your nest thermostat wired.

Digging deeper i took the attached photos of the system and found what i believe to be low voltage thermostat wire from the heating unit and mid way up the wall enters a junction box, where the thermostat wire appears to be wire nutted in with the thicker wire. Please see the attached photos. Check the terminals of your nest thermostat you will need to use a screwdriver to unscrew the top cover of your thermostat.
